OPEN 8/6/09:

Paralegal. Potential position for legal secretary also.  Current paralegal is retiring - has been with this attorney a long time and does a lot for him.  Practice includes Work Comp, SSD and PI work.  Resumes and cover letters should be submitted to Truman Allen at 29 E. Ash Street, Columbia, MO 65203.

If you know of a position open, please notify an officer of MMPA and we will get it listed.
So, you are looking for a position in the legal field . . . Now what?

1)  Build your resume. Make sure you customize it for each position you apply for, and make sure it shows your abilities in the most positive light possible.

2)  Gain experience. You may have to accept a job a little lower on the ladder than you hope to eventually achieve. Positions such as receptionist, overflow legal secretary, or legal secretary will allow you to get your foot in the door.

3)  Be flexible. Even if you want a position at a large firm in a big city as a litigation paralegal, you may find that a position at a smaller firm is open - and that may be the position that you are actually better suited for.

4)  Network, network, network! Join local organizations such as MMPA, MPA, NALA, the Women's Network, etc. Attend functions, with a stack of business cards in your hand (even if you are simply a "freelance" paralegal" at the moment). Get your name out there, get to know people in the field, and it will eventually pay off.
